What is the significance of "v'Samti?"

1.

Malbim: This teaches about "Hashem will be a witness against you" (2). He Himself will make Shomron a mound ? the buildings will be destroyed.

2)

What is "Iy ha'Sadeh"?

1.

Targum Yonasan: Yagrei Chalkan. Rashi ? Yagrei is an expression of mounds, like "Yegar Sahadusa" (Bereishis 31:47). Radak ? the Targum of "v'Haysah Bavel l'Galim" (Yirmeyah 51:27) is l'Yagarin. A destroyed building is a mound of rocks.

3)

Will Shomron be a mound? Melech Ashur captured the 10 tribes, and settled people there (Melachim II, 17:24)!

1.

Radak: He settled them in Arei Shomron, but not in Shomron; he destroyed Shomron and felled its wall and every building in it ? "v'Samti Shomron l'Iy ha'Sadeh." I aroused Melech Ashur to do so willingly - "va'Ya'ar Elokei Yisrael Es Ru'ach Pul Melech Ashur?" (Divrei ha'Yamim I, 5:26).

4)

What is the significance of "l'Mata'ei Charem"?

1.

Radak: Shomron was a mountain, and vineyards in mountains are good. The verse teaches that Shomron will not be rebuilt, but they will plant vineyards in it.

2.

Malbim: Refer to 1:6:5:3.

5)

Why does it say "v'Higarti la'Gai Avaneha"?

1.

Rashi: I will drag [its stones to the valley]. This is like "Mugarim b'Morad" (4).

2.

Radak: Shomron was a mountain. When its buildings will be destroyed, the rocks will roll from the mountain to the valley.

3.

Malbim: Those who plant vineyards, they remove the rocks and clears out the mounds that remain from fallen houses. They clear also the foundation stones, so it will be proper to plant vineyards.

6)

Why will He reveal the foundation?

1.

Radak: They will raze the building to the foundation.

2.

Malbim: Refer to 1:6:5:3.
