(Mishnah): Beis Shamai say that one may not carry out a child, a Lulav or a Sefer Torah into a public domain. Beis Hillel permit it.

(Gemara): All agree, however, that one may not carry out an adult. (Since an adult is able to walk himself, there is absolutely no need for it.)

R. Shmuel son of R. Yosa bei R. Bun: Beis Hillel even permit carrying out an adult.

If so, why did the Mishnah specifically mention a child? It is to show that Beis Shamai do not permit even a child, even though it is needed.

Question: Shmuel would be carried on a chair from neighborhood to neighborhood?

R. Zeira said to R. Yasa: One could explain that Shmuel was unable to walk himself.

R. Yasa replied: He was healthier than me and you (and he nevertheless permitted them carry him).

Beraisa (R. Yishmael bei Rebbi): The stones that we sat upon in our youth made for us a war in our old age.

R. Yona instructed the Chaverim not to sit on the outer benches of the Synagogue of Bar Ula, as they are cold and chill those that sit on them.

Rav instructed his students not to sit on the outer boards of the Study Hall of Asi, as they are cold.

R. Abahu would go to bathe in the bathhouse of Tiveria and he would walk, resting his bare feet on two boards, to avoid the cold, until he reached the bath.

The people said to him - why are you doing this?

He replied - I have saved my strength for my old age. (The cold that a person suffers when he is young damages him when he is old.)

Rav Huna was not able to come to the Study Hall on Yom Tov.

Rav Katina asked - Why did Rav Huna not instruct them to carry him to the Study Hall. Did the Beraisa not teach that one may carry those who are slightly ill?

Rav Huna instructed the Head of the Exilarch that he may be carried out on a chair.

Question (Rav Chisda): Did the Beraisa not teach - a person may not be carried out in a chair, whether a man or a woman...?

Answer: Even the student of a Sage would not make this mistake (so how could Rav Huna be mistaken)? Rather, because the public depended on the Head of the Exilarch, it was permitted.

R. Yirmiyah instructed Dr. Bar Giranti that people should carry him on a sheet (on Shabbos) to visit the sick.

Maysha the grandson of R. Yehoshua ben Levi was carried on a sheet in order to give a Torah lecture on Shabbos.

R. Zerikan to R. Zeira: When you travel to the south, ask R. Simon if this is permitted.

R. Simon told them from R. Yehoshua ben Levi: Even if it is not an actual public need but it might develop into one, it is permitted.

There was a story of R. Eliezer, R. Aba Mari and R. Matanyah who instructed them to carry Putah to the Minister on Shabbos, as perhaps it would be needed by the public.

Beraisa: (Beis Shamai also said that) one may not carry a key. Beis Hillel permit it.

Rav Hoshiya bar Rav Yitzchak: (Beis Hillel) only permit carrying the key of a food container, but a key for a utensils container may not be carried.

Question: On Yom Tov, R. Abahu sat and taught with the key of a mansion in his hand...?

Answer: There were peppers in the mansion.
