THE MEANING OF DREAMS (Yerushalmi Ma'aser Sheni Perek 4 Halachah 6 Daf 27a)

(a)

(Tosefta): A person was disturbed as he didn't know where his father left his Ma'aser Sheni and he was shown in a dream that they are a particular amount and in a particular location. (Must he be concerned that if he finds money there, it might actually be Ma'aser Sheni?) Such a case came before the Rabbanan and they said, "Dreams have no significance this way or that'', meaning that he need not be concerned that it is actually Ma'aser Sheni money.

(b)

Question (R. Yona): He was disturbed and it was revealed to him in a dream, and you say this (that it has no significance)?!

(c)

(R. Yosi): Surely you only need to be concerned for a dream if he hadn't thought about it in during the day and he saw it in a dream, but if he had, whatever a person thinks about in the daytime is what he dreams about at night.

(R. Avin): If one ascribes significance to dreams bearing in mind the condition of R. Yosi, he is doing well.

A person once came before R. Yosi ben Chalafta and told him that he had seen in a dream that he should go to Kepudkiya and he will find his father's property. R. Yosi asked him, "Did your father ever go to Kepudkiya? He replied in the negative. R. Yosi said, "If so, count 10 beams into your home and you will find that your father hid his property there.'' (Kepudkiya - is made up of two Greek words - Kapa (meaning a beam) and Dika (meaning ten).)

A person once came before R. Yosi ben Chalafta and told him that he had seen in a dream that he was wearing an olive wreath. R. Yosi told him that after a while, he will become eminent. Another person came before him and told him that he had seen the same dream. This time R. Yosi told him that he will receive lashes. He asked R. Yosi, "You told that person that he will become eminent, but you told me that I will receive lashes?!'' R. Yosi explained, "He dreamt it at the time when the blossoms are out (so it was a sign of growth); you dreamt it when the olives are being hit (to harvest them)''.

A person once came to R. Yishmael b'R. Yosi and told him that he had seen in a dream that he was watering olives with olive oil. R. Yishmael said, "Woe to you, as you had relations with your mother!''

A person once came to R. Yishmael b'R. Yosi and told him that he had seen in a dream that his two eyes kissed each other. R. Yishmael said, "Woe to you, as you had relations with your sister!''

A person once came to R. Yishmael b'R. Yosi and told him that he had seen in a dream that he had three eyes. R. Yishmael told him, "You are an oven builder - two of them are your eyes and the third is the eye of the oven'' (which is a small opening at the top of the oven where the smoke rises up).

A person once came to R. Yishmael b'R. Yosi and told him that he had seen in a dream that he had four ears. R. Yishmael told him, "You fill barrels of wine - two ears are your ears and two ears are the handles of the barrel.''

A person once came to R. Yishmael b'R. Yosi and told him that he had seen in a dream that people are running away from him. R. Yishmael told him, "You bring a torch and everyone moves away from you''.

A person once came to R. Yishmael b'R. Yosi and told him that he had seen in a dream that he was wearing a merchant's notebook that contains 12 pads. R. Yishmael told him, "You have a donkey's packsaddle that has 12 tears.''

A person once came to R. Yishmael b'R. Yosi and told him that he had seen in a dream that he swallowed a star. R. Yishmael told him, "Woe to you, as you killed a Jew, as the pasuk states (Devarim 24:17), "...a star has gone out from Yaakov''.

A person once came to R. Yishmael b'R. Yosi and told him that he had seen in a dream that his vineyard was growing lettuce. R. Yishmael told him, "Your wine will become vinegar and you will take lettuce and dip it in the vinegar.''

A person once came to R. Yishmael b'R. Yosi and told him that he had seen in a dream that they said to him, "Throw out that which came down from your fingers''. R. Yishmael told him, "Pay me a fee and I will interpret it for you.'' (The person did not pay.)

Then he told R. Yishmael that he had seen in a dream that they said to him, "You will have a swelling in your mouth''. R. Yishmael told him, "Pay me a fee and I will interpret it for you''. (The person didn't pay.)

Then he told R. Yishmael that he had seen in a dream that they said to him, "Straighten your fingers''. R. Yishmael said, "Didn't I ask you to pay a fee and I will interpret it? When they said to you, "Throw out that which came down from your fingers'', it meant that there is a leakage of rainwater running down onto your wheat. When they said to you, "You will have a swelling in your mouth'', your wheat had swollen up from the leakage. When they said to you, "Straighten your fingers'', they had already grown and everything was ruined.''

A Cuti once said, "I will go and mock one of the Elders of the Jews'' (i.e. R. Yishmael b'R. Yosi). He came to him and said, "I saw in my dream 4 cedars and 4 sycamores, a beam, feathers and a stick and I was sitting on top of them relieving myself.

R. Yishmael b'R. Yosi said, "Woe to you! That wasn't a real dream! But nevertheless, you won't leave emptyhanded. The four cedars signify the four beams of the bed and the four sycamores are the four legs of the bed. The beam signifies the beam that support the legs. The feathers signify the straw on which a person lies. The stick signifies the stick at the top of the bed. You sitting on top of them signifies you lying in the bed, sick, not alive and not dead.'' And this is what happened to the Cuti.

A certain woman once came before R. Eliezer. She said, "I saw in a dream that the beam of the house broke''. He said to her, "You will give birth to a boy''. (A birthing stool is called a Mashber, which has same root as Nishbarah - broke and the beams of the house allude to the boys of the house.) She later gave birth to a boy.

After a while, she came looking for R. Eliezer. His students told her that he wasn't there and they asked her what she wanted. She told them, "I saw in a dream that the beam of the house broke.'' They said, "You will give birth to a boy and your husband will die''. (The beam alludes to the husband, who is the support of the house.)

When R. Eliezer came, they told what had happened. He said, "You have killed a person! A dream follows its interpretation, as the pasuk states (Bereishis 41:13), "And it was, as he interpreted for us, it was that way''.

(R. Yochanan): All dreams follows their interpretations, except for a dream about a person drinking wine...When one person drinks wine it is good for him and when another person drinks wine, it is bad for him - if a Torah scholar drink wine (in a dream) it is good for him; if an ignoramus drinks wine it is a bad sign for him.

A person once came to R. Akiva and said that he saw in his dream that his leg was severed. R. Akiva told him, "The festival will come and you won't have meat to eat''.

Another person came to R. Akiva and said that he had seen in a dream that his leg was fat. R. Akiva asked him, "When the festival will come, you will have enough meat''.

A student of R. Akiva was once sitting and appeared troubled. R. Akiva asked why and he said that he had seen in a dream three difficult things - 1) In Adar you will die; 2) you will not see Nisan and 3) you will not gather what you plant.' R. Akiva told him, "They are three good things - 1) you will be elevated (Hadra) with the honor of Torah. (The word 'die' alludes to the teaching of Chazal that a person should 'kill himself' over learning Torah). 2) You will not come to be tested (Nisan = Nisayon). 3) You will not bury the children that you produce.
