WHEN THE FLAVOR IS MADE WORSE (Yerushalmi Halachah 3 Daf 32b)

(a)

Question: When R. Yochanan said (above daf 67 (f)) that vinegar into cold beans is prohibited, is that also true when the beans had been hot and then cooled down before the vinegar fell in, or are the beans permitted in such a case?

(b)

Answer: It is certainly true that if you say that they would also be prohibited, then even if they were still hot they should be prohibited, since when they will eventually cool, they will be improved by the vinegar! (Therefore, it must be that only when they had always been cold, they are prohibited since the vinegar improved them; but if they had been hot and then cooled, they are permitted.)

(c)

Beraisa: (Explaining the disagreement between R. Meir and the Chachamim over when the prohibited item worsens the flavor (as mentioned above daf 67-1(e)1.)) R. Meir - Any prohibited item that gives flavor, whether it improves or worsens the flavor, it is prohibited. Chachamim - if it improved it, it is prohibited; if it worsened it, it is permitted.

1.

As the Mishnah (in Maseches Terumos) teaches - And similarly, barley that fell into a pit of water, even if the waters became spoilt, they are permitted.

(d)

(R. Yochanan): The Mishnah follows the Chachamim, but according to R. Meir, if it worsens the flavor it is prohibited, even if it worsened it from the beginning to the end. And R. Shimon ben Lakish said that the Mishnah follows both opinions, as even R. Meir agrees that if it worsened it from the beginning to the end, it is permitted.

(e)

(R. Yosi bei R. Bun): R. Yochanan and Reish Lakish disagree explicitly - according to R. Yochanan, it is a matter of dispute (between R. Meir and the Chachamim); according to Reish Lakish, all agree (as explained above).
