USING A DOFEN AKUMAH (Yerushalmi Halachah 11 Daf 7b)

(a)

(Mishnah): If there was a house whose roof collapsed in the middle and he positioned Schach over the hole, if the distant between the Schach and the wall is four Amos, it is invalid. (We use the concept of Dofen Akumah 'the bent wall' to view the invalid Schach around the edges as part of the wall.)

(b)

This law also applies to a courtyard that has an awning surrounding it.

(c)

A large Sukah that had its Schach distanced from the walls with a section of invalid Schach, if the width of the invalid Schach is four Amos, it is invalid.

(d)

(Gemara - Beraisa - R. Chiya): An air space in the Schach invalidates the Sukah if it is three Tefachim wide; invalid Schach only invalidates if it is four Amos wide.

(e)

R. Yosa: We learn both of these from Mishnayos -

1.

The law that air space invalidates if it is three Tefachim is taught in the Mishnah - 'If he distances the Schach three Tefachim from the walls, it is invalid'.

2.

Invalid Schach only invalidates if it is four Amos wide is taught in our Mishnah - 'If there was a house whose roof collapsed in the middle and he positioned Schach over the hole, if the distant between the Schach and the wall is four Amos, it is invalid.' We deduce that if the distance was less than four Amos, it is valid.
