1)

What is the difference between "Gabachas" and "Karachas"?

1.

Rashi: "Gabachas" incorporates the front and sides 1 of the scalp 2 , "Karachas", only the back. 3

1

The Sifri learns this from "mi'Pe'as Panav" - which is inclusive. See Torah Temimah, note 165.

2

From where it begins to slope forward (Sifra on Pasuk 42). See also Torah Temmah, note 147.

3

From where it begins to slope back (Sifra on Pasuk 42). See also Torah Temmah, note 146.

2)

Why does the Torah write "Yimaret Rosho" and not "Yikarech Rosho"?

1.

Sifra: In order to include the beard 1 in the Din of Karachas. 2

1

See Torah Temimah, note 162.

2

Sifra: And the Torah writes "Rosho" to teach us that he is Tahor even if the hair of his head falls out and not of the beard.

3)

Why does the Torah refer to the back of the head as "Rosho" (S'tam), and the front, as "Pe'as Panav"?

1.

Oznayim la'Torah: Because whereas someone who sees someone head from the back will say that he saw his head, if he sees him from the front he will say that he saw his face - ssince the face attests on the person. 1

1

Oznayim la'Torah: As in Yeshayah, 3:9. See also Yevamos, 120a 'Ein Me'idin Ela al Pirtzuf ha'Panim'.

4)

Why does the Torah insert the (otherwise superfluous) words "Kere'ach hu"?

1.

Sifra: To teach us that, even if the hair of his head falls out after a Nesek the size of a G'ris appeared, he is still Tahor. 1
