Malbim: It truly answers the latter question, what did the king speak to you? The king said, 'say 'I request that you not return me...''! The officers will think that he answers the first question, what did you speak to the king? Tzidkiyah knew that the officers will ask these two questions together 1 .

Would it not be safer, and straighter, to tell Yirmeyah to request this, and the king will grant this request? Then he can answer also if they ask to hear Tzidkiyah's answer (refer to 38:27:1:2)! In any case, Yirmeyah will not tell the entire conversation! (PF)
