Gid'on spoke to Anshei Sukos. Why did the officers answer him?

Malbim: Gid'on told Anshei Sukos to give Tzedakah, for his men were tired and hungry. It is understood that they refused. Gid'on then asked the officers, and said that they were chasing Zevach and Tzalmuna (verse 5), and therefore they must give.

Why did they refuse to give to him?

Malbim: They feared to give to them, lest the enemy overpower and punish them [for aiding the one who chases them].
