What is the Chidush? Yisrael were commanded three Mitzvos when they entered Eretz Yisrael ? to appoint a king, wipe out Zera Amalek, and build the Beis ha'Mikdash (Sanhedrin 20b)! Perhaps David's Chidush was to build a house for Hashem. The verses and tradition were only to fix a place. (PF)
