From which Shevet was Ayalon?

'Rashi': It was from Dan. Why did the Sefer not mention Dan? Perhaps the cities were close to cities of Efrayim, and it was known that they are of Dan.

Malbim: Yehoshua (21:23-24) says that Dan gave Eltekei, Givson, Ayalon and Gas Rimon. Here it mentions only the last two, and attributes them to Efrayim! This is because Dan did not conquer their portion, like it says in Shofetim. Efrayim conquered Ayalon and Gas Rimon, and gave them to the Leviyim, so it says here that Efrayim gave them. Eltekei and Givson are omitted here, for they were not conquered.
