'Rashi': Because the wings were spread in the place of the Aron, they covered the Aron.

Did the Keruvim totally cover the Aron and the staves?

'Rashi': The staves were extended towards the east (verse 9). This enabled the Keruvim to [be close to the Aron, and] totally cover the Aron. However, they did not totally cover the staves, for the staves extended to the east end of Kodesh ha'Kodoshim.
