The verse refers to all the days of Adam, "that he lived." These last words are superfluous! (We find a similar verse regarding Avraham (Bereishis 25:70).

Divrei Eliyahu: They hint that they should have lived longer. Adam should have lived 1000 years; he gave 70 to David. Avraham should have lived to 180; he died at 175, lest he see Esav turn to evil.
