What are the connotations of ?be?Eretz Mitzrayim be?Eretz Goshen??
Rashi: It means ?in the part of Eretz Mitzrayim that was called ?Goshen?. 1
See Sifsdei Chachamim.
What is the significance of the double expression, "va'Yeshev Yisrael... va'Ye'achazu Bah"?
Targum Yonasan: It means that they built Batei-Midrash and mansions in Goshen; and they acquired fields and vineyards there.
K?li Yakar: It is an indictment of Yisrael, who now began to settle down in Egypt, even though Hashem had told Avraham Avinu that they would be sojourners there. 1
Sanhedrin, 106a: Whenever the Torah writes ?Vayeishev?, it denotes Tza?ar. The Torah therefore inserts ?Vayeishev Yisrael ? ? because it heralds the death of Ya?akov Avinu - which in turn, heralds the beginning of Shibud Mitzrayim. 2
QUESTIONS ON RASHI
Rashi writes: "'In the land of Egypt' - And where [specifically]? In the land of Goshen." Why does Rashi add this?
Gur Aryeh: We should not think that Egypt and Goshen were two distinct lands (and the Bnei Yisrael lived in both). The Torah already told us that the Bnei Yisrael descended to Egypt (46:8). If so, Goshen must be a region within Egypt.
