Malbim: We came to the level where we do not have masters - "v'Hismakartem Sham l'Oyvecha la'Avadim veli'Shfachos v'Ein Koneh" (Devarim 28:68). No man or nation wanted us to dwell by them. It was a disgrace if a Jew lived in his land. We could not live in special cities, for we were a mockery to those around us; they would not let us live near them.
