When did he make the Mizbe'ach?

1.

Malbim: R. Yosi (Zevachim 59a) holds that he made it only at the time of Chinuch [ha'Bayis], when Moshe's copper Mizbe'ach was too small. Our verse implies like R. Yehudah there, that Shlomo already made his Mizbe'ach, and at the time of Chinuch he was Mekadesh the Chatzer [to offer Korbanos on it].

2)

Was the Mizbe'ach of copper?

1.

Malbim: No. It was of stone, in place of Moshe's copper Mizbe'ach.

3)

Was the entire Mizbe'ach 20 by 20?

1.

Malbim: No. That was the size of the Ma'arachah (where Korbanos are burned) 1 .

The entire Mizbe'ach was 28 by 28, for in every direction we must add an Amah for (a) the walkway of Kohanim around the Ma'arachah, (b) the Keranos, (c) the Sovev, and (d) the Yesod.
