1)

What is the meaning of the first half of the Pasuk?

1.

Rashi: It means that there will be so much grain to thresh (around Shavu'os time) that they will still be busy with it when the time comes to harvest the grapes (in Tishri), and the Batzir (the grape harvest) will last until the Zera (the time to seed).

2)

What are the implications of "Va'achaltem Lachm'chem la'Sova"?

1.

Rashi: It implies that the little that they will eat 1 will be blessed 2 in their stomachs. 3

1

Which is of itself, a healthy thing to do. See Oznayim la'Torah. Moshav Zekenim ? And the Gemara in Eruvin, 83b, which states that it is bad to eat less than normal, is speaking when there is no B'rachah.

2

See also Ba'al ha'Turim.

3

Sifra: As the Pasuk writes in Mishpatim, 23:25 "u'Veirach es Lachm'cha ve'es Meimecha".

3)

Why does the Torah insert the (otherwise superfluous) word "Viyeshavtem la'Vetach be'Artz'chem"?

1.

Sifra: 'To preclude Chutz la'Aretz - when Yisrael are in Galus - when there is no guarantee of security - even when they keep the Mitzvos. 1

1

See Torah Temimah, note 18.

4)

If you will eat little and be satisfied, what is the point of all the grain and wine?

1.

Rashbam and Seforno (both in Pasuk 10): You will export it to other - distant - Shir Ma'on) countries. 1

1

See Rashbam there, who writes simply to sell it - possibly to Geirim and others who do not own land. Refer also to 26:4:1.1:1.

5)

Since there will be such abundance of food, obviously you will eat to satiation! Why does the Torah need to mention it?

1.

Moshav Zekenim: Because we might otherwise have thought that they will be so busy gathering the harvest that they will not have time to eat.

2.

Shir Ma'on: The Torah means that they will eat to satiation - and not excessively. 1

3.

Refer to 26:5:2:1.

1

Shir Ma'on: Most rich people are unhealthy due to overeating, and the blessing is that Hashem will enable us to resist the temptation to overeat.

QUESTIONS ON RASHI

6)

Rashi writes that "Batzir" will last until "Zera". What is the B'rachah, bearing in mind that the Batzir is in Tishrei and the Zera in Cheshvan, as the Gemara states in Bava Metzi'a 106b?

1.

Riva: The Batzir lasts the whole of Tishri - inasmuch as, if someone did not harvest his grapes at the beginning of the month, the season extends until the end of the month. The Zera begins in Cheshvan, 1 and the B'rachah is that even if one begins with the Batzir at the beginning of Tishri, it will last until Cheshvan.

1

This is like R. Shimon. R. Shimon ben Gamliel says that the Zera begins in the middle of Tishri, and R. Yehudah, at the beginning of Tishri. How will we answer according to R. Yehudah? Perhaps, just as they argue about the time of Zera, so too, do they argue about the time of Batzir (PF).
