QUESTIONS ON RASHI

3)

Rashi writes that David asked in the wrong order. Why did he do so?

1.

Malbim: He needed to ask first if they will hand him over, i.e. if Sha'ul will send a Shali'ach before coming, and ask the city to expel David. And if they will not do so, will Sha'ul himself come? 1 This is why the first time, he said Yasgiruni - through a Shali'ach, they would request only David, the head of the rebellion. They could not ask for him and his men, for then David's men would fight Anshei Ke'ilah. Hashem answered "Yered" - Sha'ul will not send a Shali'ach; he himself will descend. There was no need to answer the first question. David asked (verse 12), when Sha'ul descends, will the city hand over me and my men, i.e. open the gate to allow Sha'ul to fight David's men in the city.

This is unlike Yuma 73a, which says that asked in the wrong order.
