What is "Nachalah Lo Yih'yeh lo ... " referring to?

1.

Rashi #1 and Targum Yonasan: It refers to a regular portion (of fields and vineyards - Targum Yonasan) in Eretz Yisrael.

2.

Rashi #2 (citing the Sifri): "ve'Nachalah Lo Yih'yeh lo" refers to Nachalas She'ar - the inheritance of other nations, with reference to the Keini, Kenizi and Kadmoni; "be'Kerev Echav" ? to the inheritance of five, with reference to the five Cana'ani nations of the West Bank of the Yarden - and the lands of Sichon and Og in the East Bank of the River Yarden, make up the other two Cana'ani nations.

3.

Rashi #3 (citing Rabeinu Klonimus' version of the Sifri): "ve'Nachalah Lo Yih'yeh lo" refers to Nachalas Chamishah, with reference to the five tribes, who received their inheritance from Moshe 1 and Yehoshua; 2 "be'Kerev Echav", to the inheritance of the other seven tribes, who distributed the inheritance among themselves after Yehoshua died.

4.

Ramban (citing the Sifri): See answer #2. The five are the Cana'ani, Chiti, Emori, Chivi and Yevusi. Their land flowed with milk and honey, and it is the primary inheritance of Eretz Yisrael. And "be'Kerev Echav" refers t the seven nations ? the previous five plus the P'rizi and the Girgashi, which did not flow with milk and honey, as the Ramban explained above. 3

5.

Hadar Zekenim: Pasuk 1 taught us that the tribe of Levi do not receive an independent inheritance, the current Pasuk, that they do not inherit inside another tribe ("be'Kerev Echav") - like Shimon received inside Yehudah.

1

Rashi: Reuven, Gad and half of Menasheh.

2

Rashi: Yehudah, Efrayim and the other half of Menasheh.

3

Refer to Sh'mos, 13:5:1:2.

2)

What are the connotations of "Hashem Hu Nachalaso"?

1.

Targum Yonasan: It means that the twenty-four Matnos Kehunah that Hashem has given them is their inheritance'.

3)

Where did Hashem tell the Kohanim this?

1.

Rashi: In Korach Bamidbar, 18:20, when He said to them "In their land you shall not inherit... I am your portion!"

4)

The Sifri writes that "be'Kerev Echav" is the inheritance of five. What is that?

1.

Refer to 18:2:1:2 & 3.

2.

Ramban: The five are the Cana'ani, Chiti, Emori, Chivi and Yevusi. Their land flowed with milk and honey, and it is the primary inheritance of Eretz Yisrael. 'The seven' include also the P'rizi and the Girgashi, which were not Zavas Chalav and D'vash, as the Ramban explained above. 1

3.

Da'as Zekenim, Hadar Zekenim and Rosh (all citing the B'chor Shor), Moshav Zekenim (citing R. Tam): 'Nachalas She'ar' refers to the sons of Rachel, Bilhah and Zilpah, who are only paternal brothers. Our Pasuk teaches us that Levi does not inherit together with the five other B'nei Leah, even though they are full brothers. 2

4.

Hadar Zekenim: She'er is the inheritance of one's wife, like we explained "She'ero" is his wife (Bava Basra 109b). 3 'Inheritance of the five' are the other relatives for whom a Kohen is Metamei (a parent, child or sibling). 4

1

Refer to Sh'mos, 13:5:1:2.

2

Hadar Zekenim: This is difficult, since Pasuk 1 already taught that Levi does not inherit! Also, 'She'er' always means Davar Echad (one thing; perhaps the text should say 'Acher' - another thing - close relatives - PF)!

3

Moshav Zekenim: A Kohen does not inherit the property of his wife (a Bas Yisrael who inherited her father). This is not correct, since Pinchas inherited land from his wife (Bava Basra 111b)! According to the opinion that inheritance of one's wife is mi'de'Rabanan, we can say that the Sifri is an Asmachta. (PF)

4

How is this considered five? Just like we count separately a father and mother, and a son and daughter, we should count a brother and sister [before mariage] as two! Further, also Kohanim and Levi'im inherit their relatives' Metaltelim, Avadim, and also land that they purchased [or redeemed, or received as a Cherem field?] This requires investigation. (PF)
