Why does it say "Teshuvas ha'Shanah"?

1.

Radak: Refer to 11:1:2:3.

2.

Malbim: Do not say that David himself did not go to fight because he was weary from the previous war. This was a year later!

2)

What is "Es Tzeis ha'Melachim"?

1.

Rashi: There is a time in the year when kings normally go out, when the land is full of standing [grain] and the horses find grain in the field to eat.

2.

Radak: It is the same time of year that the kings went out to fight, just a year later. It is called "Teshuvas ha'Shanah", because the sun returns to the place [where it was at the beginning of the year]. This Perush is primary.

3.

Malbim: Do not say that David himself did not go to fight due to the cold and rain. It was Sivan, when all kings go out for war!

3)

Why does it say that they destroyed Amon and besieged [the city] Rabah, and David sits in Yerushalayim?

1.

Malbim: Surely this took a long time, and still, David did not go himself, without a proper reason for this (refer to 11:1:1:2, 11:1:2:3) 1 . Therefore, he stumbled with Bas Sheva.

1

Malbim: Also, do not say that it was a small war, and it is not honorable for the king to go himself. "He sent Yo'av the head general, his servants and all Yisrael"!
