What was Moshe referring to when he said "Ki Somar Elai Sa'eihu be'Cheikecha!"?
Rashi: He was referring to the Pasuk in Ki Sisa Sh'mos, 32:34 "Lech Nechei es ha'Am" (Go and lead the people), in conjunction with the Pasuk in Va'eira Sh'mos, 6:13 "Vayetzavem el B'nei Yisrael" (And He commanded him with regard to Yisrael. 1
Da'as Zekenim and Hadar Zekenim: 'If not, I would flee!'
Targum Yonasan: 'That You told me in Egypt to bear their sins with your strength'.
'To lead them gently and to tolerate them' (Rashi there)..
Why did Moshe say "al ha'Adamah ... "? Does one carry a feeding baby only in Eretz Yisrael?
Rashi: "Al ha'Adamah ... " is not referring to the phrase preceding it; it is a continuation of "Ki Somar Elai Sa'eihu be'Cheikecha".
What is the difference between "he'Anochi Harisi ... " and "Im Anochi Yelidtihu"?
Ramban #1 (citing Targum Onkelos) and Seforno: "he'Anochi Harisi 1 ... " means 'Am I their father (who caused their pregnancy) or their mother (who gave birth to them)"!'.
Ramban #2 (citing the Ibn Ezra and the R'dak) and Targum Yonasan: "he'Anochi Harisi 2 ... " means 'Am I their mother (who was pregnant with them and who gave birth to them) or am I their father them?" 3
Ramban #3: Both refer to the mother; Moshe was asking Hashem whether he carried the people in the womb) and whether he bore them. 4
Ramban: As in Bereishis 49:26.
Ramban: As in Divrei ha'Yamim 1, 4:17.
Ramban: As in No'ach Bereishis, 6:10 and in Mishlei, 23:22. According to both of the Ramban' first two explanations, Moshe uses the masculine term "Omein" with reference to both father (See Ba'al ha'Turim) and mother.
Ramban: And he uses the term "Omen" because, as a man, he could be an Omein, but not an Omenes.
What did Moshe mean when he said "Ka'asher Yisa ha'Omen es ha'Yonek" - assuming he was referring to fathering the people?
Seforno: Moshe meant that, despite the fact that they all have independent minds, a father is able to lead his children because they realize that he loves them all and will do only what is in their best interest, which is not the case with K'lal Yisrael, who have no faith in him at all, who suspect him and who constantly try him out to see whether he will act on their behalf.
Sanhedrin, 8a: He meant exactly what he said. That is what Hashem expects of a Dayan - to treat the people with patience and love like a nurse carries a suckling, even when they anger him. 1
See Torah Temimah, note 9.
What did Moshe mean when he said "Ka'asher Yisa ha'Omen es ha'Yonek", assuming he was referring to giving birth to the people?
Ramban: He meant that it is the mother who remembers all her life the terrible pains of childbirth and of pregnancy that she suffered.
