What is the meaning of "va'Yifrotz"?

'Rashi': He 1 scattered [his sons to all parts of Yehudah and Binyamin]. This is like "u'Veis Avoseihem Partzu la'Rov" (Divrei ha'Yamim I, 4:38).

I.e. Rechav'am. According to Malbim's latter Perush, Aviyah sent Rechav'am's sons.

What is the meaning of "va'Yaven va'Yifrotz"?

1.

Radak: He understood, and [feared lest his sons rebel, therefore] he scattered them to solidify his kingship.

Malbim #1: Rechav'am feared lest his sons rebel against Aviyah after he himself dies, therefore] he scattered them among Yehudah and Binyamin, and gave to them authority over particular areas.

Malbim #2: Aviyah understood [that he should immediately begin to start running the country, so he strengthened himself throughout Yehudah and Binyamin.

Why did he give to them much food?

1.

Radak: It was lest they need to request from people.

2.

Malbim #1: This (and many women) was so they would be happy with their portions and indulge in pleasures, and not contest the kingship [of Aviyah].

Malbim #2: Aviyah prepared much food, to show that he is running the country, and people will see that he will be king after Rechav'am.

Why did he get for them many wives?

1.

Radak: It was to increase his seed. He already had 18 wives and 60 Pilagshim!

Malbim #2: Aviyah prepared many women for himself, for he knew that he will be king.
