How does Hashem crown him with Chesed and mercy?

1.

Radak: He afflicts him with illnesses to redeem his Nefesh.

2.

Malbim (5): When the Nefesh leaves the body, it is renewed like a Nesher, whose feathers fall off and it grows new feathers, with which it flies to Shamayim. So the Nefesh, after it removes its earthly body, it wears festive attire, in which it flies to its residence and its Father's above.
