Why is Oger ba'Kayitz called Ben Maskil?

1.

R. Yonah: Sechel makes a person zealous in obligatory matters; lack of Sechel stops him. It mentions gathering in summer, for this is a wise one's act, to gather summer matters - grain, wine, raisins and figs.

2.

Malbim: Kayitz is after the harvest. Oger is gathering the seeds one at a time. A Maskil, even in Katzir 1 , when there is nothing in the field to gather, he engages in gathering the remaining seeds.

3.

Malbim (according to Melitzah): A Ben Maskil learns also in his old age, even though he cannot be Mechadesh much, only he gathers a little at a time. 'One who learns in his old age

It seems that the text should say 'Kayitz' (PF).

What is the significance of "Nirdam b'Katzir Ben Mevish"?

1.

R. Yonah: This teaches that shame is the opposite of Sechel. Man is praised according to his Sechel (12:8); shame is the opposite of praise, for it comes from disgrace. Regarding the Atzel it mentions the grain harvest, because it is the greatest, and even at that time, he sleeps.

2.

Malbim: A Ben Mevish is late to act, and lazy. Not only does he sleep in Kayitz - rather, even in Katzir, when the grain is in the field and it is the time of working the field, he sleeps and does not do anything.

3.

Malbim (according to Melitzah): A Ben Mevish sleeps (does not learn) even in his youth, the time of reaping and gathering.
