Rashi writes: "And afterwards, the families of Kena'an spread - into many families." But perhaps the verse means that they spread out, i.e. dispersed, over the earth?

Gur Aryeh: Since all of Kena'an lived in one land with a defined border (10:19), we cannot explain that they spread out geographically; rather, they spread in number.
