What was Moshe referring to when he said ?Hashem Elokeichem Hirbah eschem??
R. Bachye #1: H was referring to the fact that seventy souls went down to Egypt and six hundred thousand souls left Egypt.
R. Bachye #2: He was referring to the numbers of Yisrael, but o the fact that Hashem madde them great. 1
R. Bachye: Like ?ve?Chol Rabei Melech Bavel? (?the important officers of the king of Bavel?) in Yirmiyah 39:13.
Why did Moshe compare Yisrael to the numberless stars, when their numbers were known to be six hundred thousand?
Rashi: What Moshe meant was that Yisrael's existence is eternal, like ha'Yom (the sun during the day, 1 and the moon and stars at night). 2
R. Bachye #1: With reference to 1:10:0.1:1 - ?and today, you are numberless? - Presumably, this refer to the fact that the numbers of the women, children and men over sixty was not known, in which case they must have totalled several million.
R. Bachye #2 (citing Devarim Rabah): ?ve?Hinchem? means ?va?Chaniyaschem? - your camp - with reference to the four Degalim of Yisrael, which surround the Shechinah, like the Mazalos surround the Shechinh. 3
Because "ha'Yom" means 'ke'ha'Yom' - like the sun and moon (Sifsei Chachamim).
And the word la'Rov" refers, either to a future date, when they will become numerous like the stars (See Sifsei Chachamim) or, not quantitively, but qualitively - See Oznayim la'Torah.
Like Hashm promised Avraham. See R. Bachye.
