What is the significance of bearing a daughter?
Radak: A son was a Mashal for Yaravam, like I explained (refer to 1:3:3:2). A daughter is a Mashal for his son Zecharyah, and for Shalum ben Yavesh, who ruled after him; they were weak like females. Zecharyah reigned only six months, and he was killed, and Shalum reigned only one month, and he was killed.
Malbim: This represents the kings after Malchus Yehu ceased; they were weak.
Above, it says "va'Teled Lo" (3). Why does it not say "Lo" here?
Malbim: She already started to be Mezanah with other men. He had a Safek if the daughter was from him 1 . The Nimshal is, in these generations, Tzadikim were diminished, and all did evil to be Mezanah with idolatry.
Do not say that "Lo" hints to a male, like himself (like Bereishis Rabah 85:5 expounds "va'Tahar Lo" (Bereishis 38:18) ? Tzadikim and Giborim, like Yehudah), for it does not say "Lo" regarding the second son (8). (PF)
What is the significance of the name "Lo Ruchamah"?
Malbim: The Navi showed hatred for his daughter and wife 1 . However, he did not yet call her 'Lo Ami', which shows that the bond between Him and them totally departed. Even though He will not have mercy on the 10 tribes, they are still His nation, for Yehudah, Binyamin and the Shevatim that accompanied them 2 remain.
Shimon inherited amidst Yehudah, and Leviyim were among all the Shevatim. Also, many from Malchus Yisrael came to [Yehudah and Binyamin] after they saw Asa's success (Divrei ha'Yamim II, 15:9). Also, according to the opinion that Pilegesh b'Giv'ah was at the end of the Shoftim, this explains the population explosion in Binyamin after that episode (refer to Shoftim 17:1:1:2*). (PF)
Why does it say "Lo Osif Od Arachem"?
Rashi: It means, Lerachem (I will not have more mercy).
Radak: I will not increase that I will have mercy. The same applies to "Al Tarbu Tedaberu" (Shmuel I, 2:3), "v'Nede'ah Nirdefah" (below, 6:3).
What is the meaning of "Ki Naso Esa Lahem"?
Rashi: I will apportion to them the portion of their cup [of punishments] and their deeds. This is like "va'Yisa Mas'os" (Bereishis 43:34).
Radak #1: I will bring the enemy upon them. They will exile them and destroy their land.
Radak #2: It is as if it says Osam, just like "Hargu l'Avner" (Shmuel II, 3:30; the prefix Lamed is in place of Es). I will carry them to their enemies' land.
Radak #3: Until now, I bore and pardoned them, for I had mercy on them. I will not do so any more 1 .
Malbim: I will no longer have mercy on them via bearing them and pardoning their sins. Even though in the days of Yaravam ben Yo'ash, Hashem had mercy on them and saved them ? "Ki Ra'ah Hashem Es Oni Yisrael?; v'Lo Diber Hashem Limchos Es Shem Yisrael mi'Tachas ha'Shamayim va'Yoshi'em b'Yad Yaravam ben Yo'ash" (Melachim II, 14:26-27). Now He will not do so ? He will exile them.
I.e. the verse asks in astonishment ? will I continue to bear and pardon them?! (PF)
