דכי אתא רב דימי אמר תלתין ותרין קרבי עבדו רומאי בהדי יונאי ולא יכלו להו, עד דשתפינהו לישראל בהדייהו. והכי אתנו בהדייהו, אי מינן מלכי מנייכו הפרכי אי מנייכו מלכי מינן הפרכי ... עשרין ושית שנין קמו להו בהימנותייהו בהדי ישראל, מכאן ואילך אישתעבדו בהו ...

והתני רבי יוסי ברבי, מלכות פרס בפני הבית שלשים וארבע שנה, מלכות יון בפני הבית מאה ושמונים שנה, מלכות חשמונאי בפני הבית מאה ושלש, מלכות בית הורדוס מאה ושלש, מכאן ואילך צא וחשוב כמה שנים אחר חורבן הבית. אלמא מאתן ושית הוו ואת אמרת מאה ושמונים הוו? אלא עשרין ושית שנין קמו בהימנותייהו בהדי ישראל ולא אישתעבדו בהו, ואמטו להכי לא קא חשיב להו כשפשטה מלכות הרשעה על ישראל.

Gemara Avodah Zarah 8b-9a

When Rav Dimi arrived [in Bavel], he said: The Romans waged thirty-two battles against the Greeks, but could not overpower them - until they joined up along with Yisrael. This was their stipulation, "if the kings will be from among us, the dukes will be from you; and if the kings will come from you, the dukes will be from us." ... For twenty-six years the Romans kept their trust to Yisrael, but from then onwards they subjugated them ...

But does not Rebbi Yosi, descendant of great ones, teach: The Persian Empire reigned during the [Second] Temple era for 34 years; the Greek Empire for 180 years; the Hasmonean Dynasty for 103 years; and the Herodian dynasty for 130 years. For [all dates] thereafter, you must then calculate how many years it is since the Destruction of the Temple. - This means that [Roman rule] was 206 years; yet you said that there were only 180? Rather, for 26 years they kept their trust to Yisrael and did not subjugate them; that is why [those 26 years] are not counted as "when the evil kingdom extended over Yisrael."
