Part II - The Cave

אזל הוא ובריה טשו בי מדרשא. כל יומא הוה מייתי להו דביתהו ריפתא וכוזא דמיא, וכרכי. כי תקיף גזירתא אמר ליה לבריה נשים דעתן קלה עליהן דילמא מצערי לה ומגליא לן. אזלו טשו במערתא איתרחיש ניסא איברי להו חרובא ועינא דמיא והוו משלחי מנייהו והוו יתבי עד צוארייהו בחלא. כולי יומא גרסי בעידן צלויי לבשו מיכסו ומצלו והדר משלחי מנייהו כי היכי דלא ליבלו.	R. Shimon and his son (R. Elazar) hid in the Beis Medrash the entire day; his wife brought bread and water to them. When the decree [to kill him] was intensified, he feared lest Romi will torture her and find out his whereabouts, for women's minds are easily diverted. He and his son fled to a cave. Miraculously, a carob tree and a spring of water were created for them. To preserve their clothes, the entire day they learned sitting in sand up to their necks; they wore their clothes only at the time of prayer.
איתבו תריסר שני במערתא. אתא אליהו וקם אפיתחא דמערתא, אמר מאן לודעיה לבר יוחי דמית קיסר ובטיל גזרתיה! נפקו, חזו אינשי דקא כרבי וזרעי. אמר מניחין חיי עולם ועוסקין בחיי שעה?! כל מקום שנותנין עיניהן מיד נשרף. יצתה בת קול ואמרה להם להחריב עולמי יצאתם?! חיזרו למערתכם! הדור אזול, איתיבו תריסר ירחי שתא. אמרי משפט רשעים בגיהנם שנים עשר חדש. יצתה בת קול ואמרה, צאו ממערתכם, נפקו.	After 12 years, Eliyahu came to the entrance of the cave and informed him that the king had died and the decree was cancelled. They came out and saw people plowing and planting. R. Shimon said, "How can they abandon eternal life [Torah] and engage in temporary life!" (One who fears Hash-m should learn, and Hash-m will supply his needs!) Wherever they looked would burn up. A voice from Heaven: "Did you come out to destroy My world?! Return to your cave!" They returned to the cave for 12 months. They reasoned, this is how long Resha'im are punished in Gehinom, our punishment should be no longer! A voice from Heaven told them to leave the cave, and they left.

IN THE CAVE

1) Miraculous fruit -

A carob tree miraculously sprouted at the entrance to the cave, to provide them with food. Why wasn't the fruit of the new tree forbidden due to Orlah?

2) Time for Davening -

Did Rebbi Shimon take out time from his learning in order to Daven? This seems to contradict the Gemara (Shabbos 11a) that one whose full-time occupation is Torah-learning, such as Rebbi Shimon, is exempt!
