אוכלים ושותים ושמחים, ואין מתענין בר"ה ולא בשבת שובה; אמנם לא יאכלו כל שבעם, למען לא יקלו ראשם ותהיה יראת ה' על פניהם.

(א) אוכלים ושותים ושמחים - ר"ל אף שהוא יום הדין מ"מ מצוה של ושמחת בחגך שייך גם בו שגם הוא בכלל חג כדכתיב תִּקְעוּ בַחֹדֶשׁ שׁוֹפָר בַּכֵּסֶה לְיוֹם חַגֵּנוּ (תהלים פא:ד) ונאמר אִכְלוּ מַשְׁמַנִּים וּשְׁתוּ מַמְתַקִּים וגו' כִּי קָדוֹשׁ הַיּוֹם לַאֲדֹנֵינוּ וְאַל תֵּעָצֵבוּ כִּי חֶדְוַת ה' הִיא מָעֻזְּכֶם (נחמיה ח:י).

[After the prayers on Rosh Hashanah] we eat, drink, and are joyful. And we do not fast on Rosh Hashanah, nor on Shabbos Shuvah. However, they should not eat to complete satiety, so that they not come to light-headedness; rather fear of Hashem should be upon their faces.

1. We eat, drink, and are joyful - I.e., Despite that Rosh Hashanah is the Day of Judgement, nevertheless, the Mitzvah to rejoice on Festivals applies to it as well; it is also called a Chag (Tehilim 81:4). And it says, "Eat fatty foods, and drink sweet drinks... for this day is holy unto our G-d; do not be sad, for the joy of Hashem is your strength" (Nechemyah 8:10).
