THE GENERATION OF THE MIDBAR

1) What date? -

The Gemara (Ta'anis 30b) teaches that one of the reasons that the 15th of Av is a joyous occasion, is that the generation of the Midbar stopped dying on that day. Rashi cites a Midrash that prior to that final year, thousands would die every year on the 9th of Av, but in the fortieth year no one died. Why then is this commemorated only six days later, on the 15th of Av?

2) The 40th Year -

Did anyone die on Tish'ah b'Av of the 40th (and last) year in the desert? If not, how was it that Hashem's decree was annulled?

3) The Shechinah Returns -

The Gemara adds that at that time, the Shechinah returned to them, and Hashem once again communicated with Moshe directly (see Rashi to Devarim 2:16-17). How did this play a role in the choosing of this date? What is its connection to the matchmaking celebrations of 15 Av?

REMOVAL OF THE SENTRIES

4) Good or Bad? -

One of the reasons for rejoicing on 15 Av, is that Hoshe'a Ben Elah, the last king of Malchus Yisrael, finally removed the sentries who would stop the people from Aliyah la'Regel to Yerushalayim. If this was such a good deed, why did Hashem exile Malchus Yisrael with finality during his reign?

BURYING THE DEAD OF BEITAR

5) Berachah of the day -

What Berachah was first instituted on the 15th of Av?

6) Two Miracles -

What were two aspects of the miracle that the dead of Beitar were buried? How do we commemorate each aspect?

WOOD FOR THE MIZBE'ACH

7) Cause for Celebration? -

The 15th of Av was the last day that wood could be cut for the Mizbe'ach, when the summer sun still dries the wood (Ta'anis 31a). But why is that a cause for celebration?

8) Adding to one's Learning -

Why is the mother held responsible for a child's diligence in learning?

A DAY FOR CELEBRATION

9) Common Theme -

What theme do these 6 events that took place on 15 Av have in common?

10) Hashem's Anger Abates -

How are the celebrations of Yom Kippur and the 15th of Av, related to the preceding topic in Maseches Ta'anis - the tragic events of 17 Tamuz and Tish'ah b'Av?

11) Matan Torah and the Beis ha'Mikdash -

The Mishnah (Ta'anis 4:8) interprets the Pasuk in Shir ha'Shirim (3:11), that "the crown the King was given on the day of His wedding" refers to Matan Torah; and "on the day of His heart's rejoicing" is the building of the Beis ha'Mikdash. But those events did not take place on Yom Kipur, or on the 15th of Av! Why does the Mishnah cite support from this Pasuk?

A DAY FOR SHIDUCHIM

12) White Clothing -

What was the symbolism in the white clothing that the maidens would wear?

13) How to Make Shiduchim -

What inspiration can we draw from the way that our ancestors engaged in matchmaking - and the days on the calendar that they did so?

14) Look at the Family -

Of the three desirable qualities in a prospective bride that are mentioned in the Gemara, why does the Mishna seemingly mention only one - a good family?

15) Important No Less -

Why would the women emphasize beauty, or jewelry? Didn't they know that "Grace is false, and beauty is vanity"?

16) The Circular Dance -

The Gemara concludes its description of the maidens' dances on the 15th of Av, by saying that in the future, Hashem will make a circular dance for the Tzadikim. What is the meaning of a circle-dance, and what is its connection to the dances of 15 Av?
