You shall surely tithe all the produce of your plantings, that which is brought forth in the field year by year. And you shall eat before Hashem your G-d, in the place which He shall choose to cause His name to dwell there, the tithe of your grain, your wine, and your oil, and the first-born of your herd and of your flock; that you may learn to fear Hashem your G-d, for all time. And if the way is too long for you, for you are not able to carry it, because the place which Hashem your G-d shall choose to set His name there, is too far from you; for Hashem your G-d shall bless you. Then you shall turn it into money; you shall bind up the money in your hand, and go unto the place which Hashem your G-d shall choose. And you shall put the money to whatever your soul desires, for oxen, for sheep, for wine, for strong drink, or for whatever your soul asks of you; and you shall eat there before Hashem your G-d, and you shall rejoice, you and your household. And the Levite that is within your gates, you shall not forsake him; for he has no portion nor inheritance with you. At the end of every three years, you shall bring forth all the tithe of your produce of that year, and you shall leave it within your gates. And the Levite - because he has no portion nor inheritance with you - and the stranger, and the orphan, and the widow, that are within your gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; in order that Hashem your G-d may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do. (On Shabbos, 2nd Aliyah) At the end of every seven years you shall make a Shemitah. And this is the matter of the Shemitah: every creditor shall release what he is owed by his fellow; he shall not exact it of his fellow or his brother, because Hashem's Shemitah has been proclaimed. Of a foreigner you may exact it; but whatever of yours is with your brother - your hand shall release. However there shall be no needy among you--for Hashem will surely bless you in the land which Hashem your G-d gives you for an inheritance to possess it. Only if you diligently hearken unto the voice of Hashem your G-d, to observe to do all this commandment which I command you this day. For Hashem your G-d will bless you, as He promised you; you shall lend unto many nations, but you shall not borrow, and you shall rule over many nations, but they shall not rule over you. If there will be among you a needy man, one of your brethren, within any of your gates, in your land which Hashem your G-d gives you; you shall not harden your heart, nor shut your hand from your needy brother. Rather you shall surely open your hand unto him, and shall surely lend him sufficient for his need in that which he lacks. Beware that there be not a base thought in your heart, saying: 'The seventh year, the year of Shemitah, is close'; and your eye be evil against your needy brother, and you give him not; and he cry unto Hashem against you, and it be a sin in you. You shall surely give him, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give unto him; because that for this thing Hashem your G-d will bless you in all your work, and in all that you put your hand unto. For the poor shall never cease out of the land; therefore I command you, saying: 'You shall surely open your hand unto your poor and needy brother, in your land.' If your brother, a Hebrew man, or a Hebrew woman, be sold unto you, he shall serve you six years; and in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you. And when you let him go free from you, you shall not let him go empty-handed. You shall furnish him liberally out of your flock, your threshing-floor, and your winepress; of that which Hashem your G-d has blessed you, you shall give unto him. And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and Hashem your G-d redeemed you; therefore I command you this thing today. And it shall be, that if he says unto you: 'I will not go out from you'; because he loves you and your house, because it is good for him with you. Then you shall take an awl, and put it through his ear and into the door, and he shall be your slave forever. And also unto your maidservant you shall do likewise. It shall not seem hard unto you, when you let him go free from you; because double the service of a hired hand has he served you for six years; and Hashem your G-d will bless you in all that you do.
