אמר רבי יוחנן מאי דכתיב אַשְׁרֵי אָדָם מְפַחֵד תָּמִיד וּמַקְשֶׁה לִבּוֹ יִפּוֹל בְּרָעָה (משלי כח:יד)? ... אקמצא ובר קמצא חרוב ירושלים, דההוא גברא דרחמיה קמצא ובעל דבביה בר קמצא עבד סעודתא אמר ליה לשמעיה זיל אייתי לי קמצא אזל אייתי ליה בר קמצא. אתא אשכחיה דהוה יתיב אמר ליה מכדי ההוא גברא בעל דבבא דההוא גברא הוא מאי בעית הכא קום פוק! אמר ליה הואיל ואתאי שבקן ויהיבנא לך דמי מה דאכילנא ושתינא אמר ליה לא ... נקטיה בידיה ואוקמיה ואפקיה. אמר, הואיל והוו יתבי רבנן ולא מחו ביה שמע מינה קא ניחא להו איזיל איכול בהו קורצא בי מלכא! אזל אמר ליה לקיסר מרדו בך יהודאי. אמר ליה מי יימר? אמר ליה שדר להו קורבנא חזית אי מקרבין ליה! אזל שדר בידיה עגלא תלתא בהדי דקאתי שדא ביה מומא בניב שפתים ואמרי לה בדוקין שבעין דוכתא דלדידן הוה מומא ולדידהו לאו מומא הוא. סבור רבנן לקרוביה משום שלום מלכות, אמר להו רבי זכריה בן אבקולס יאמרו בעלי מומין קריבין לגבי מזבח! סבור למיקטליה דלא ליזיל ולימא, אמר להו רבי זכריה יאמרו מטיל מום בקדשים יהרג! אמר רבי יוחנן ענוותנותו של רבי זכריה בן אבקולס החריבה את ביתנו ושרפה את היכלנו והגליתנו מארצנו.

אמר רב יהודה אמר רב, מאי דכתיב, מִי הָאִישׁ הֶחָכָם וְיָבֵן אֶת זֹאת וַאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר פִּי ה' אֵלָיו וְיַגִּדָהּ עַל מָה אָבְדָה הָאָרֶץ (ירמיהו ט:יא) דבר זה אמרו חכמים ולא פירשוהו אמרו נביאים ולא פירשוהו, עד שפירשו הקדוש ברוך הוא בעצמו שנאמר וַיֹּאמֶר ה' עַל עָזְבָם אֶת תּוֹרָתִי אֲשֶׁר נָתַתִּי לִפְנֵיהֶם (שם י"ב). אמר רב יהודה אמר רב, שלא ברכו בתורה תחילה.

מקדש ראשון מפני מה חרב? מפני שלשה דברים שהיו בו עבודה זרה וגלוי עריות ושפיכות דמים... אבל מקדש שני שהיו עוסקין בתורה ובמצות וגמילות חסדים מפני מה חרב? מפני שהיתה בו שנאת חנם - ללמדך ששקולה שנאת חנם כנגד שלש עבירות עבודה זרה גלוי עריות ושפיכות דמים.

... רבי יוחנן ורבי אלעזר דאמרי תרווייהו ראשונים שנתגלה עונם נתגלה קצם אחרונים שלא נתגלה עונם לא נתגלה קצם אמר רבי יוחנן טובה צפורנן של ראשונים מכריסן של אחרונים אמר ליה ריש לקיש אדרבה אחרונים עדיפי אף על גב דאיכא שעבוד מלכיות קא עסקי בתורה אמר ליה בירה תוכיח, שחזרה לראשונים ולא חזרה לאחרונים.

אמר רב יהודה אמר רב, מאי דכתיב וְעָשְׁקוּ גֶּבֶר וּבֵיתוֹ וְאִישׁ וְנַחֲלָתוֹ (מיכה ב:ב)? מעשה באדם אחד שנתן עיניו באשת רבו ושוליא דנגרי הוה, פעם אחת הוצרך (רבו) ללות אמר לו שגר אשתך אצלי ואלונה שיגר אשתו אצלו שהה עמה שלשה ימים קדם ובא אצלו אמר לו אשתי ששיגרתי לך היכן היא אמר לו אני פטרתיה לאלתר ושמעתי שהתינוקות נתעללו בה בדרך אמר לו מה אעשה אמר לו אם אתה שומע לעצתי גרשה אמר לו כתובתה מרובה אמר לו אני אלווך ותן לה כתובתה עמד זה וגרשה הלך הוא ונשאה כיון שהגיע זמנו ולא היה לו לפורעו אמר לו בא ועשה עמי בחובך והיו הם יושבים ואוכלים ושותין והוא היה עומד ומשקה עליהן והיו דמעות נושרות מעיניו ונופלות בכוסיהן ועל אותה שעה נתחתם גזר דין. ואמרי לה על שתי פתילות בנר אחד.

R. Yochanan: "Happy is the one who is always afraid; one who hardens his heart will fall in evil" (Mishlei 28:14) ... Yerushalayim was destroyed through the enmity between Kamtza and Bar Kamtza. A certain man had a friend named Kamtza and an enemy named Bar Kamtza. He made a banquet and asked his servant to invite Kamtza. The servant mistakenly invited Bar Kamtza. The host saw Bar Kamtza at the banquet. The host: What are you doing here? You are my enemy! Leave! Bar Kamtza: Since I am already here, let me stay. I will pay for my meal. The host: No. Bar Kamtza: I will pay for half the banquet! The host: No. Bar Kamtza: I will pay for the entire banquet! The host did not consent; he bodily threw him out. Bar Kamtza (to himself): Chachamim were there and they did not protest. They must have approved! I will inform on them to the king. Bar Kamtza to the Caesar: The Jews have rebelled against you! Caesar: Why should I believe you? Bar Kamtza: Send a Korban, and see if they will offer it. He sent a choice calf with Bar Kamtza. On the way, Bar Kamtza blemished it on the upper lip (some say, in the eye). This is not a blemish in a Nochri's Korban (on a private altar), but it is a blemish for Yisrael (or for offering on behalf of Nochrim in the Mikdash). Chachamim thought to offer it, to avoid angering the Caesar. R. Zecharyah ben Avkulas: If so, people will say that we may offer blemished animals on the Mizbe'ach! Chachamim thought to kill Bar Kamtza, lest he tell the Caesar that Yisrael did not offer his Korban. R. Zecharyah: If so, people will say that one who blemishes a Korban is killed! Said R. Yochanan, The humility of R. Zecharyah destroyed our Mikdash, burned our Heichal and exiled us from our land.

Rav Yehudah citing Rav: "Who is the sage who understands, or the prophet who can tell us, why was the Land destroyed?" (Yirmeyah 9:11)? The Chachamim could not answer, the prophets could not answer, until Hashem Himself explained, "... because they abandoned My Torah!" (v. 12). Rav Yehudah citing Rav explains: They did not bless (thank Hashem for the Torah) before learning.

The first Mikdash was destroyed because of idolatry, adultery, and murder... The second Mikdash, where there was Torah, Mitzvos and Gemilus Chasadim, was destroyed on account of Sin'as Chinam (baseless hatred). This shows that Sin'as Chinam is the equivalent of these three [severe] sins. ... For the generation of the First Mikdash, whose Aveiros were revealed by the Pasuk, the end to their exile was also revealed [70 years], whereas the end of the second exile has not been revealed. Said R. Yochanan: The earlier ones' fingernails were better than our fullness! Resh Lakish replied: No, we are better, for we study Torah even in the face of foreign dominion. But the fact that the Mikdash has not yet returned is support for R. Yochanan.

Rav Yehudah citing Rav: "They oppressed a man and his house, a man and his inheritance" (Michah 2:2) refers to a certain apprentice who desired his teacher's wife. The teacher needed to borrow money. The apprentice told him to send his wife, and he would lend it to her. He sent her; she stayed there three days, and her husband came to look for her. The apprentice: I gave to her the money, and she left right away! I heard that she had Bi'ah with youths. The apprentice advised his teacher to divorce her. He offered to lend to him the money to pay her Kesuvah, for it was large. He divorced her, and the apprentice married her. The teacher was not able to pay his debt on time; the apprentice asked him to pay the debt by working for him. The teacher served his ex-wife and the apprentice. While they ate and drank, his tears flowed into the cup. At this time, the Churban was decreed. Others say, it was decreed due to two men who would share a wife.
