א. משנכנס אב ממעטין בשמחה; ובר ישראל דאית ליה דינא בהדי כותי, לישתמיט מיניה דריע מזליה...	1. When the month of Av enters, we reduce in joy. A Jewish person that has a legal dispute with a Gentile, should postpone it, because it has bad Mazal.
ב. מראש חדש עד התענית ממעטים במשא ובמתן ובבנין של שמחה, כגון בית חתנות לבנו או בנין של ציור וְכִיּוּר, ובנטיעה של שמחה, כגון אבורנקי של מלכים שנוטעים לצל להסתופף בצלו...	2. From Rosh Chodesh until the fast we minimize business transactions and building of joy, for example a wedding-house for his son, or a building with paintings and decorations . Or plantings of joy, e.g. a royal orchard planted for shade...
ג. שבוע שחל בו תשעה באב, אסורים לספר ולכבס, אפילו אינו רוצה ללובשו עתה אלא להניחו לאחר ט' באב, ואפילו אין לו אלא חלוק אחד, אסור; וכן המכובסים מקודם, בין ללבוש בין להציע בהם המטה; ואפי' מטפחות הידים והשלחן, אסור... הגה: ואנו נוהגין להחמיר בכל זה מתחלת ראש חדש עד אחר התענית, אם לא לצורך מצוה. .. וכן לכבוד שבת לובשים כלי פשתן ומציעין לבנים כמו בשאר שבתות.	3. Some have the custom not to eat meat or drink wine during this week. (Wine vinegar is permitted.) Some add (on to the custom) from Rosh Chodesh until the fast, and some add from 17 Tamuz. Rama: From Rosh Chodesh and on, we conceal the slaughtering knife; we slaughter meat only for a Mitzvah need, e.g. for a sick person, Shabbos, a Bris Milah, a Pidyon ha'Ben, or the like.
טז. יש נוהגים שלא לרחוץ מראש חדש, ויש שאין נמנעין אלא בשבת זו... הגה: ולצורך מצוה שרי... ונוהגין שלא לרחוץ, אפילו בצונן, מראש חודש ואילך. ואפי' בערב שבת של חזון אסור לרחוץ כי אם ראשו ופניו ידיו ורגליו בצונן; ויש מקילים בחפיפת הראש בחמין למי שרגיל בכך כל שבת.	16. Some have the custom not to bathe from Rosh Chodesh Av, and some abstain only during this week ... Rama: but for a Mitzvah need it is allowed ... The custom is not to bathe, even with cold water, from Rosh Chodesh and on. Even on the eve of Shabbos Chazon, it is forbidden to wash except for the head, face, hands, and feet in cold water. Some are lenient about washing the hair in hot water, for one who normally does so every week.
