OBLIGATION

1) A Rabbinic Innovation? -

By what justification did the Chachamim institute Purim, and the Mitzvah to read the Megillah? The Torah commands us not to add or subtract Mitzvos! How does the Rambam address this issue?

1. Yosef Da'as to Megilah 14:p1, ד"ה ארבעים ושמונה

2. Lecture for Megilah 7 from 0:00 til 5:00, by Rabbi Maier Caplan

2) Mid'Oraisa? -

In what sense does the reading of the Megilah constitute a Mitzvah mid'Oraisa? In what sense does it constitute Hallel?

3) Two readings -

The Gemara (4a) teaches that we must read the Megilah at night, and "repeat it again" by day. This is an unusual expression - especially as Tosfos explains that the daytime reading is the primary Mitzvah!

WHO IS OBLIGATED?

4) Women -

Are women obligated in (hearing the) reading of the Megilah, and why? What is the nature of their obligation?

5) Children -

What is the nature of children's obligation in Megilah? Why is the custom to involve them so actively in the reading? What was the children's role in the miracle of Purim?

6) Children: Age for Chinuch -

At what age does the obligation of Chinuch begin for Megilah? Why do the Rishonim compare this Mitzvah to that of fasting on Yom Kippur, or Shofar on Rosh Hashanah (rather than Lulav or Tzitzis, which begin at an earlier age)?

PRIORITY

7) Suspending Torah-Study -

The Halachah is that we interrupt Torah-learning to go and hear the Megilah. But why is this considered Bitul Torah; isn't the Megilah itself Torah?

8) Postponing Other Mitzvos -

The Gemara teaches that Megilah reading overrides the Avodah, whereas attending to a Mes Mitzvah overrides them both. Does this refer only to a case in which we can return to the first Mitzvah later, or even to when we will miss it entirely?

HALACHOS

9) Placement in the Tefilah -

What is the order of Tefilah on Purim, and at what point is the Megilah read?

10) Writing a Megilah -

What are two aspects of the writing of Megilas Esther? What were the two stages in the Megilah's institution?

1. Lecture for Megilah 7 from 17:45, by Rabbi Maier Caplan

11) Reading from the Text -

Can part of the Megilah be recited by heart (e.g. he was not looking inside his scroll while reading, or his scroll was missing words)? What should be done regarding the verses that the entire congregation recites aloud?

12) Reading Audibly -

If reading for oneself, is it necessary to read loudly enough to be heard? May one is hard of hearing, or deaf, read for themselves, or for others?

13) Precision in Pronunciation -

What is the Halachah if one omitted a word in the reading, or mis-pronounced a word in a manner that alters its meaning?

14) Nodding Off -

One who read the Megilah in drowsiness, was Yotzei (Megilah 18). Does this mean that the listener was nodding off - or the reader?

15) Stopping and Starting -

If one had to pause in the middle of reading for as long as it takes to read the entire Megilah, may he resume where he left off, or must he return to the beginning?

16) In Other Languages -

Although Halachah allows writing and reading a Megilah in a foreign language, what practical complications make this inadvisable (or unfeasible)?

THE 10 SONS OF HAMAN

17) Reading -

How should the names of the ten sons of Haman be read? What is this meant to indicate?

18) Writing -

What is the unique format for writing the ten sons of Haman in the Megillah scroll?

19) Vav is for "Vayzasa" -

In what manner is the "Vav" of "Vayzasa" drawn out? What does this symbolize?

CUSTOMS

20) Unrolling before Reading -

Why do we unroll the entire Megilah before beginning to read it? Do we do so even when reading for individuals? What other distinctions do we find between public and private readings?

21) Banging at Haman's Name -

Is there deeper meaning in the custom to bang and make noise upon hearing Haman's name during the reading of the Megilah? Why is this done by the children?

ASSEMBLING THE MEGILAH

22) Stitching -

With how many stiches should the parchment sheets of the Megilah be sewn together?

23) Attaching A Pole -

Should the Megilah parchment be affixed to a pole? Should it be attached at the beginning, or at the end?
