THE DEARNESS OF A MINCHAH

Translation: R. Yitzchak asked, why does it say "Nefesh" only regarding Minchah? Usually a poor person brings a Minchah. Hash-m considers it as if he offered his soul! R. Yitzchak asked, why are there five kinds of Minchas Nedavah with oil? A parable explains this. The king's friend prepared a meal for the king. The king knew that his friend was poor, so he requested 'make five kinds of fried foods for me, so I will get pleasure from you.'
(a)

Also regarding Oleh v'Yored it says "v'Nefesh Ki Secheta"!

1.

Maharsha: There, Nefesh is written next to Chet. Regarding Menachos, it says "v'Nefesh Ki Sakriv."

2.

Iyun Yakov: Rashi on Chumash said that among voluntary Korbanos, it says Nefesh only regarding Minchah. Maharsha overlooked this.

(b)

Why does an Oni bring a Minchah?

1.

Rashi: He has no animals.

i.

Maharsha: Also, he has no Turim or doves, like it says about a very poor person "v'Im Lo Sasig..."

ii.

Daf Al ha'Daf: Rashi implies that if he has one animal, he is not considered an Oni. Rashi in Berachos (5b) explained 'v'Iy Mishum Mezoni...' that one who has [enough] food is rich. Magen Avraham (248:16, citing SMaG) says that if one's animal will be taken, this is Piku'ach Nefesh and he may be Mechalel Shabbos to stop it. (NOTE: He said so about one who goes with a caravan!) Torah Temimah (Bamidbar 20:10, citing Mechilta) learns from "Osi v'Es Miknai" that one's animal is his life. If so, even one who has one animal is an Oni. We find "ul'Rash Ein Kol Ki Im Kavsah Achas."

2.

Daf Al ha'Daf citing Chidushei ha'Rim: "Minchah HI Sheluchah lA'doni l'Esav" - even a little Avodah, an Oni's Minchah, has great importance in Shamayim if it comes amidst Mesiras Nefesh. This is because it is "lA'doni l'Esav" - against the great strength of the Yetzer ha'Ra.

(c)

Are there five kinds of fried Menachos?

1.

Rashi: There are five Menachos with oil - fine flour, Machavas, Marcheshes, and Chalos and Rekikim among those made in an oven.

i.

Maharsha: It is not a precise Mashal. There, it is one meal. Each of the five Menachos is a Minchah by itself.

(d)

Why did the king want to benefit from his friend?

1.

Rashi: He wants his friend to be accepted in front of him.

i.

Iyun Yakov: Hash-m loves an Oni. We say 'if your G-d loves the poor [why doesn't He feed them - Bava Basra 10a]. It says in Pesachim 118 'when am I beloved in front of You? When You hear my supplication - "Oni Kara va'Shem Shome'a." '
