DAF DISCUSSIONS - SUKAH 5

Elie Pelcovits asked:

(a) I don't understand how the gemmra says that acc. to rabbi yehuda the height of the aron would be 8 and 1/2 tefachim I got a 8 and 1/3.

(b) also the pasuk that is quoted on 5a from Shamot 25;10 say that the aron was 1 and 1/2 ammot hiegh acc to a 5?6 tefach amma isn't that only 7.5 teffachim.

(c) also why doesn't rashi at the bottom of 4b qoute rabbi yehuda.

(d) lastly is this machlokes similar to the one on 32b about the teffachim to amma ratio?

thanks alot

The Kollel replies:

1) According to Rebbi Yehudah, the Amah of the measurement of the Kelim was comprised of 5 Tefachim. Therefore, the Aron was 7 1/2 -- plus one of the Kapores -- for a total of 8.5.

2) According to Rebbi Meir, the Kelim were of "regular" 6-Tefach Amos, and therefore the Aron plus Kapores was 10.

3) It is obvious that those who find the source of the Halachah of Sukah from the Aron must hold that the Aron was 10.

4) There, the Machlokes is whether we reset the Tefach by Lulav to be a fifth of a 6-Tefach Amah.
