DAF DISCUSSIONS - CHULIN 129

Shmuel Katz asked:

1 - A Cohen is not allowed to be in a room with an amputation, since it is an Ever. How about teeth and gums. Is that considered an Ever ? I am a Dentist, and when doing Jaw surgery, sometimes a section of the Jaw is removed. Is that a problem for a Cohen ? There is Baser, Gidim , and Atzomos ?

2- Regarding EL-Al, if it's a problem, why don't you just fly another airline ? and more important, how do you find out if there is a Meis on the airplane ? Do they just tell you ? and if you tell then you are a Cohen, do they charge you to change the flight ?

The Kollel replies:

1. Teeth are not Metamei, even from a Mes (like hair, and fingernails, which are not considered to have Chiyus in them even while attached to a live person; see Rashi and Tosfos to Berachos 5b, -YS). As for a jaw, a bone of an Ever is Metamei only when the bone is whole.

2. These questions will be addressed in a private mailing.
