DAF DISCUSSIONS - AVODAH ZARAH 65

Meir Eliezer Bergman asked:

The Gemoro says on 65b that Rovo should have answered Bar Shishach from one of two pesukim. Why would these be better than the argument that he did give?

The Kollel replies:

If Bar Sheshach would not have been summoned to attend the king immediately, Rava's argument would indeed have been meaningless, since Bar Sheshach did not think he had any reason to be summoned at all. Apparently, it happened in a miraculous fashion simply to prove Rava correct. (A similar miracle happened in Avodah Zarah 16b, in order to support Rebbi Eliezer's argument before the court.)

The Gemara is asking that Rava could have make a more solid argument. He could have brought Pesukim that indicate that the pleasures of Olam Haba are far better than the material and hedonistic pleasures of Bar Sheshach.

Best wishes,

Yaakov Montrose
