DAF DISCUSSIONS - SOTAH 29

Elisha Yagudayev asks:

The mishna said that rabbi akiva learns from the extra vav of venitmeah(5:29) that she is asur to the adulterer. Now the gemara is saying that he leans from the extra vav that she is asur to marry a kohen> WHat does he learn from the vav? ALso do Rebbi in the Mishna and Rabbi Yishmael in the braisa hold of the same derashos? Thank You.

The Kollel replies:

Dear Elisha,

Rebbe in the Mishna and R ' Yishmael in the Braisa are the same opinion.

Concerning R' Akiva the following is certain: He uses the extra Vav and R' Yishmael does not. Rashi Sota 27b DH Shtei Pe'amim says that R' Yishmael uses 2 Psukim for Ba'al and Bo'el and a 3rd Posuk for Trumah. According to the Maharsha's Girsa the third Posuk for Truma is v'Nitmaah (Bamidbar 5:29) and Ba'al- Bo'el is from Nitmaah (5:14) and Im Nitmaah (5:27) According to the Maharshal on Rashi, 5:14 and 5:29 are for Ba'al- Bo'el and 5:27 Im Nitmaah is for Truma. Rashi also says that for Truma, R' Yishmael and R' Akiva are alike.

In Sota 29a the Gemara says that R'Akiva uses 4 Drashos (and R' Yishmael 3 Drashos) The last one is the extra Vav which seems to be Truma or Kehuna- but that seems to be not like the Mishna unless you say that R'Akiva means he needs the Vav to have enough for all the Drashos. One could learn that Vav is for the Bo'el and the others are for the remaining Drashos.

All the best,
