Rashi in Yoma 84a explains that it is an illness that begins in the teeth or gums and ends in the stomach and is life-threatening. Some commentaries translate it as 'scurvy', which is 'an illness that is caused by a lack of vitamin c. I don't know whether the two are one and the same or not.
