In the Gemara where Rav Yehuda bar Yechezkel was defending himself in front of Rav Nachman for having put someone in nidui, how was he able to set out his case before the baal din showed up?

It seems to be that once Rav Nachman explicitly stated that he should not have summoned Rav Yehudah in the first place, he no longer considered this a Din Torah (but rather two Talmidei Chachamim discussing the Halachah in a certain case).
