Dear Reb Mordechai:
I was wondering about the statement in the Yerushalmi that the Kusim falsified the Torah (by adding the word Shchem in Devarim 21:30). The gemara states that this is shown by the fact that Elonei Moreh being near Shchem is proven from a gezayra shava with Bereshis 12:6.
Why would the gemara leave out an EXPLICIT tochacha against the Kusim that they simply added words to the Torah, something very wrong. Why do we have to know about the gezeyra shava alone, since the fact of their rejection of Torah She Beal Peh would appear of secondary importance to the fact that they added words in the Torah.
Thanks.
The Yerushalmi (Sotah 7:3) means to say the same thing that the Bavli (Sotah 33b) says. They did not actually falsify the Torah and add a word into the Torah. Rather, they believed that Shechem was where Har Grizim and Har Eival were located, and explained the Torah in such a manner. When the Yerushalmi says "that you wrote in your Torah" it means that in their explananations of the Torah they wrote this (or in the margins of their scrolls) but it does not mean that they wrote it in the text of the Torah itself.
Be well, Mordecai
