 DAF DISCUSSIONS - MAKOS 19
1. Benzi asks:

Rashi DH Ma'aser Rishon says that he is holding it on the East Side and I saw that the aruch laner says that it's lav dafka speaking about when he holds it on this side but rather he can be holding it on any side and he gives a reason y but I'm not sure what he means can you please explain it to me?

Benzi , London

2. The Kollel replies:

The Aruch LeNer writes that since a fig is round it does not possess a "Makom Mesuyam"; a specific or particular place [a circle does not start or finish anywhere, it continues indefinitely - DB].

Therefore if the Cohen was not holding the fig in any fixed, particular side, there would be no Makom Mesuyam for the fig. We require that he is holding it at a fixed side, in order to grant a specificness to the fig, but it is not actually necessary that this should be the east side. Rashi merely mentioned east as an example of a side, but the crucial point is that it should be a specific side.
