DAF DISCUSSIONS - ROSH HASHANAH 17

randy stein asked:

I understand the connotation to sin. But the analogy is intersting. Is there a reference in Tanach where this is found?

Thank you

The Kollel replies:

I found two refernces in Rosh Hashanah 17a that punishment for sins is compared to burning in a dish. Firstly the Gemara cites Zechariah 13:9 (so that is a reference from Tanach) that Hash-m purifies the sinners like silver is purified in the melting-pot and tests them like one examines gold. Later on in the Gemara Rav Yitzchak bar Abin says that the face of the sinners is similar to the base of a pot. MAHARSHA DH U'PNEIHEM explains that when the souls arise from Gehinom after having being purified like silver their faces are black because the fire burnt them.

The concept of heat, which is good for the righteous and bad for the wicked, is illustrated in Malachi 3:19-20. The day which burns like an oven is approaching, and all the Resha'im will burn like straw in the fire. But a special sun - the sun of Tzedakah - will shine for the Tzadikim, and this brings them healing in it's wings. Gemara Avodah Zarah (end 3b) explains that in the future there will not be Gehinom (see RAN NEDARIM end 8b who writes that this means that after the Resurrection of the Dead there will not be Gehinom but there will be after death) but rather the Holy One blessed be He will remove the sun from it's "case". The Resha'im will be judged by it, but the Tzadikim will be healed by the very same sun.

HAPPY CHANUKAH
