DAF DISCUSSIONS - SHABBOS 118

Boruch Kahan asks:

In Omud Aleph the Sugya discusses how many meals are needed for Shabbos and uses the "Tamchuy" Mishna in Pe'oh as a Kasha on the 2 Shittos brought in the Mishna in 117b

I am not sure if I am missing something because there is a related Sugya in Sukka 27a on perhaps a related theme to do with how many meals one is required to have in the Sukka .Now admittedly in the Sugya there in Sukka 27a Tos D.H. BEMINEI mentions a part of our Sugya here in Shabbos but on a slightly different point Legabby Minei Targima But my question is why didn't the Gemoro in Shabbos ask from the Mishna in Sukka on to our Gemoro here or even "Fakert" why did not the Gemoro in Sukka not find the 14 meals Shvare in its Mishna there in Sukka based on our Sugya .It is "Keilu" the 2 Sugyos have no Shychus with each other and I would have thought they have a strong Shychus and dare I say it not a lot different to many Tosfosim in Shas that bring questions from "related" Sugyos till the RI or the Rabbeinu Tam give you a Yesoidos dik Chilluk between the 2 Gemoros and here it does not even get a mention

Why? I cant understand surely they are related and have a strong Shychus with each other.

The Kollel replies:

The Gemara in Shabbos did not ask a question from the Mishnah in Sukah, as the focus of the Mishnah in Sukah is clearly regarding how many meals one must eat in the Sukah, with the opinion of the Chachamim being that one must only eat one meal (the first night) in the Sukah. Accordingly, this (especially the opinion of the Chachamim, which is the significant opinion in the Mishnah) has nothing directly to do with how many meals one must eat on Shabbos.

Similarly, the Gemara in Shabbos cannot be quoted to ask a question on the Gemara in Sukah, as the Tosfos you quoted indeed points out that the standards are possibly different for Shabbos meals and Yom Tov meals. Even if this would not be the case, the Sugya in Sukah is only dealing primarily with sitting in the Sukah, and does not have an interest in discussing how many meals one should eat on Shabbos (as is evident from the fact that this is not discussed in Sukah). Could the Gemara have done this? Maybe. But it really does not have to. The famous Klal is, "Divrei Torah Aniyim b'Makom Echad v'Ashirim b'Makom Acher" (loosely translated as the Gemara will sometimes speak very little about a topic, and sometimes speak at length about that topic).

All the best,

Yaakov Montrose
