DAF DISCUSSIONS - KESUVOS 111

Sam Kosofsky asked:

In your Insights to the daf you quote the Pnei Yehoshua: "(Even after Korash allowed the Jews to return and build the second Temple the command not to return from Bavel still applied, since the time had not yet come for all of the Jews to return to Eretz Yisrael. The best proof for this is the fact that the Klei Shares did not return with the Jews who built the second Beis ha'Mikdash, the Pnei Yehoshua maintains.)"

This seems incredible to me. Does he mean to say that those who returned from Bavel with Zerubavel, Ezra and Nechemia were wrong? The Leviim were punished by removing their masser Levi for not going. Were Ezra and Nechemia wrong for bringing Jews back to Eretz Yisrael and building the Bet Hamikdash? Wasn't that decreed by the Neviim amongst them? Aren't there neviim who talk about the wonders and the kavod of the 2nd bet Hamikdash. The fact that the klei shares didn't return doesn't seem like such a wonderful proof. They had been defiled by the goyim. maybe their kedusha left so new ones had to be made. It seems to me that another Gemora makes that point. What does the Pnei Yehoshua mean?

The Kollel replies:

The P'nai Yehoshua bases his proof from the Klei Shares on the Pasuk, "Bavelah Yuva'u v'Shamah Yiheyu Ad Yom Pakdi Osam." This Pasuk refers to the Klei Shares and says clearly that they will be returned on "Yom Pakdi" (even if they were defiled). From this it seems that this day has not yet come.

As for the Gemaras which speak derogatorily about those who did not go up, he says that these can be Agados that argue with each other. As for those who did go up, the Pnei Yehoshua maintains that it was a partial "Pekidah," only meant for those who were given Reshus to go (and not for the rest of Klal Yisrael in Bavel).
