DAF DISCUSSIONS - KESUVOS 64

Avrumi hersh asks:

64b. Theres a machlokes reb Yehuda and reb Meir if you eat more food per shabbos meal or less food, but everyone agrees that you don't eat the same amount of food. So how can the gemoro cheshbon the remainder of the 14/16 meals that the woman eats based on chidka or the chachomim? Acc to everyone that will be the incorrect cheshbon of 2 kav for the wife, because it's either too much food for weekday meals or too little either way it does not fit with the exact amount of 2kav per week??

The Kollel replies:

The Mishnah says that the amount needed per week is two Kabim. The Mishnah does not go into the calculation of how much of these two Kabim are eaten daily or in each meal. The Gemara, which is looking for a Tana that fits this sum of two Kabim, can only try Rebbi Yochanan ben Berokah or Rebbi Shimon, since they mention amounts. Rebbi Meir and Rebbi Yehudah are not relevant to the Mishnah at all, since they just say a principle, that the amount needed for Eruv on Shabbos is the amount a person eats on Shabbos, without giving any hint to what this amount is. It definitely might be that if we would add up all that Rebbi Meir or Rebbi Yehudah ate the entire week, it would come to the sum of two Kabim, but there is no information of these amounts in the Mishnah in Eruvin (or anywhere else). Rebbi Yochanan and Rebbi Shimon, who specify an amount, can be a basis for calculating the sum needed for 14 or 16 meals, according to each opinion.

Avrumi asks:

I was under the impression that reb Meir and reb Yehuda were never arguing with reb yochonon Ben beroka.

They were just saying which meal portions you look at, and reb yochonon Ben beroka hives the exact shiur, which corresponds to the bread of weekday meals of reb Meir, and the shabbos challah of reb Yehuda.

In which case, EVERYONE agrees that shabbos and weekday meals cannot be measured correspondently.

The Kollel replies:

I cannot disprove your assertion from a clear source, and learning the Mishnah in Eruvin by itself, I would agree that Rebbi Yochanan and Rebbi Shimon do not have to disagree with Rebbi Meir or Rebbi Yehudah. However, I think that is exactly what the Gemara here is saying if we need to look for a "father" of the opinion that seems to be the one of the Mishnah in Kesuvos. In order to connect the two Kabim calculation to a Tana in Eruvin, we must say that Rebbi Yochanan or Rebbi Shimon disagree with Rebbi Meir or Rebbi Yehudah.
