The Gemara on Daf 16b discussed places in which Kesuvos were not written. (This does not mean that they did not give Kesuvos when they divorced their wives, but that they did not present a written Kesuvah to their wife at the time of marriage, relying on the Tenai Beis Din to entitle her to collect at the time of divorce.)
