 DAF DISCUSSIONS - SANHEDRIN 26
1. Yehuda Temp asks:

Toward the bottom of 26B of Sanhedrin, Rav Sheshet says, "forty on his shoulders"

When referring to lashes elsewhere, the BT usually just says "lashes" but here it says "forty" and "shoulders".

Why mention shoulders? Is this to indicate that the lashes are rabbinic? If so, is there a source that says that?

Thank you.

Yehuda Temp, United States

2. The Kollel replies:

Dear Yehuda,

I didn't find any explanations. It seems Rav Sheshes is simply using his own expression to convey that the person is Pasul.

All the best,
