DAF DISCUSSIONS - CHAGIGAH 5

alex lebovits asked:

The Gem. brings a proof from meraglim that 1 day equals to 1 year because they were punished for 40 years because of 40 days.(and the Gem. here calls this an example of *Midas Puronios")

But if we hold that midah tovah merubah mimidas puronios achas al chamesh meos one day of learning should be equal to 500 years! And that's not even including schar halicha that should be added as well!

The Kollel replies:

The Maharsha explains that the rule we find in the Tosefta of good being greater than punishment five hundred times is not always applicable. He explains that the source of that rule itself proves that it is not always five hundred. The Pasuk states that by "the ones who love Hash-m" their reward is five hundred times greater (2000 generations, see Shemos 20:5), yet the reward of those who merely "guard his Mitzvos" is considered only two hundred fifty times greater (see Devarim 7:9, the Maharsha is keying on the word next to Elef). He therefore states that although good is rewarded in at least the same manner that punishment is meted out, the amount of the "multiplier" is dependent on the intent behind the good act. Accordingly, the Gemara did not ascribe a particular multiplier to those who learn Torah (though if you learn hard and with good intent, imagine the Sechar!).
